What I wish I Knew Before Starting My Freelance Bookkeeping Biz

If I could go back and talk to day-one Sandy—nervous, hopeful, clicking “create account” in QuickBooks—I’d tell her this:

  1. 💬 You don’t have to be perfect to be professional. People aren’t hiring you to be flawless. They’re hiring you to be reliable, honest, and real. Own your learning curve.

  2. 🛠️ Boundaries matter more than branding. Have a scope of work. Get things in writing. Charge for your time. “Just this once” often becomes every time.

  3. 🧠 Your brain needs breaksI used to work until my eyeballs were vibrating. Now? I trust rest. It makes me better—for my clients and for myself.

  4. 🐾 Bring your whole self. Bookkeeping doesn’t have to be boring. You can talk horses, wellness, grief, real life—and still be a damn good professional.

If you're thinking about freelancing—or already doing it and wondering if you're “doing it right”—take a breath. You get to build this your way.

👉 And if you’re looking for someone to balance your books while you build your dreams, I’d be honored to help.
